Blue-Gold Banquet

Pack 280 celebrated the 99th year of Scouting and the pack's 7th birthday on Saturday with the Blue-Gold Banquet. This is one of our biggest events of the year with a great dinner, flag retirement, advancements, and the crossing over of the Webelos II scouts to Boy Scouts.

Battleship NJ and NJ Aquarium

On February 15th, 25 family members of Pack 280 took a trip to the NJ State Aquarium and the Battleship New Jersey. The aquarium was a great time with lots to see and do, but it was even better for the 21 who stayed overnight on the battleship.

Our tour began with a trip on a flight simulator (similar to what you can do on the boardwalk). Then we checked in to our assigned berths and took a self-guided tour of the ship. Appearently, we went a little off course, but we were just going to areas that weren't roped off- oops. Once all the other groups boarded the ship, it was time for a safety briefing, evening colors (lowering of the flag), dinner (click here to see our huge portions), and then a guided tour of the ship.

Our tour guide, Skip Leeson, did a fantastic job of explaining the history and significance of the ship. Rob Arlett, Jared's dad, asked Skip if he served in the Navy and amazingly enough he actually served with Rob's dad! Skip took us through many parts of the ship, some of which weren't open to last year's group, and taught us all the importance of battleships in many conflicts around the world. The Battleship New Jersey has a long history in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam, but was never hit by enemy fire.

The tour ended at 10:30 and everyone was ready for bed. We climbed into our bunks and tried to avoid hitting our heads and falling out. The bunks were only about half the width of a twin mattress and the bunk above was only about 20 inches away and were stacked three high. Seriously, I couldn't even bend my knees without hitting the top. All night long you could hear people knocking into the walls and tops of the bunks. Most of us were so tired that anything was comfortable, but I couldn't imagine living there for six to nine months at a time!

The pack hopes to make this an annual or bi-annual trip for the Webelos, but most agreed that it's not suitable for younger scouts. There is a lot of climbing up and down ladders, passing through hatches, tripping hazzards, climbing through tight areas, and plenty to hit your head on or trip over. This is an authentic battleship and is not refitted for the convenience of visitors.

Pinewood Derby Results!!!

What a great Pinewood Derby this year! There was some concern voiced about getting away from the double-elimination, but with this new track and timer, things went so smoothly that I am glad we went with it for a couple reasons. I like that everyone was still around at the end, that everyone got to run their car four times, and that the winners were a surprise right up to the end. There seemed to be far fewer upset kids.
A HUGE thank you to Dawn Zimmerman for suggesting that each boy get a certificate and to Corinne Keller for making all of them. This is something we've talked about doing before but never implemented. It was great to see all the boys excited about what superlative they got!
I also want to thank everyone for all they do to help support the pack and events like this. We can not do what we do without everyone else who pitches in. It's great to have so many people involved.

Here are some cool facts about the race:
-There was only 0.0694 seconds seperating the first and fifth place cub scouts! I can't imagine trying to judge the last few rounds of a double-elimination race that close.
-No matter which way the winners were calculated, the results ended up the same (cumulative times, cumulative times with the lowest dropped, average times, average times with the lowest dropped).
-The point method would have changed things, but I think the time calculation is a more fair way to do it.
-There was no lane advantage according to the data:
Lane 1- 7 1sts, 12 2nds, 9 3rds, 7 4ths, 0DNFs
Lane 2- 9 1sts, 8 2nds, 9 3rds, 8 4ths, 1 DNF
Lane 3- 9 1sts, 9 2nds, 9 3rds, 7 4ths, 1 DNF
Lane 4- 10 1sts, 6 2nds, 8 3rds, 9 4ths, 2 DNFs

Pinewood derby rules

Here are the OFFICIAL Pack 280 Pinewood Derby Rules for 2009:
1. Width of the car must not exceed 2 ¾”
2. Length of the car must not exceed 7”
3. Weight must not exceed 5 ounces.
4. Axles, wheels and body must be from the materials provided in this kit
5. Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited
6. No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone. ONCE YOUR CAR HAS BEEN WEIGHED IN YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO GRAPHITE YOUR CAR. NO EXCEPTIONS!
7. The car shall not ride on any kind of spring
8. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices
9. No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car.
10. NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED ACCESS TO ANY CAR THAT HAS BEEN WEIGHED IN, INCLUDING THEIR OWN.
To be eligible to race, your car must be registered and weighed in the night BEFORE the race at the from 5:30pm-7:00pm. If you do not register your car the night before you will not race.

Christmas parade and Discoversea Museum

Wow, has it really been that long since I posted anything? Maybe the next cubmaster will do a better job :)

We had a great turnout at the Selbyville Christmas Parade! Many thanks go out to everyone who came to represent Pack 280 and especially those who made the float.

On Sunday, a bunch of scouts went to the Discoversea Shipwreck museum in Fenwick Island. This is a hidden gem (pun intended) of our area. Dale Clifton, owner of the museum, was one of Mel Fisher's divers who discovered the Atocha wreck off Key West...and it's $600 Million in treasure SO FAR! Dale has many items from the Atochia on display, but more importantly, he has many things that he has found right here on our beaches! It's an amazing museum for history lovers, fans of pirates, beachcombers, or those just interested in what lies in our sand and ocean.

Sam won the challenge to find the item that had a dual purpose for hygiene- a toothpick/ear wax scoop! His prize was a coin with an undetermined value.

Henson 2008

What a great camping experience! For those who attended family camping at Henson in the spring...this was way better :) We got a little wet on Saturday, but it didn't last too long and cleared up nicely.
I think all the boys (and adults) had a great time. The weather was very nice, we did lots of activities, and we had a GREAT Boy Scout guide- Stitch. The boys got to swim, ride in a boat down the river, shoot bb guns, archery, games, fish, kayak or row a boat, and practice first aid. They even got to witness real-life first aid at the pool when Harvey cut his toe.
